How to cure a hangover!

Hey All,

Now after trying some of those summer cocktail recipes below, or even after a big night out of drinking. A lot of us are cursed with that forever pounding, painful and irritating headache. We start feeling poorly and sorry for ourselves :(.

WELL! Have I got news for you, I have found the CURE! The cure, to that much hated hangover!

To insure it works you need to follow the below five steps:

  1. An hour before you know you’re going to stop drinking, drink water! This will hydrate you.
  2. Eat a slice of toast when you get in.
  3. Drink a glass of water, with Berroca (Vitamin supplement) when you get home.
  4. In the morning drink a glass of orange juice
  5. If you’re not feeling better by now, then take the last resort…….”Paracetamol”

Remember though, that hangovers are caused by the excessive consumption of alcohol, so if your hangover is unbearable, remember that for the future, and cut down on the booze 🙂

Summertime Cocktails

Hey All,

Jess wrote a post last week about her favourite refreshing drinks, but this week we thought we would let you know about some tasty summer cocktails that have a little bit of a KICK to it. Summer is nearly over, so why not spruce it up a bit before we have to wait another year for a nice summers day!

These cocktails are predominantly made with alcohol, but you can remove the alcohol and have it as a mocktail instead 🙂 .

As a student I think myself and other students can admit, we can go a bit heavy on the drinking, but please drink responsible and know your limits. You can even download an app that shows you how much units and Vol is in the alcohol you are drinking. Please see link attached: https://www.drinkaware.co.uk/

So here are my top three summer cocktails:

At number 3 is: Orange splash

This calls upon all us citrus lovers, it’s sweet and tangy and because it is made with fresh orange juice, it makes you feel healthy too 🙂

All you need is:

  1. Fresh orange juice
  2. Lime
  3. Cut up a few strawberry’s
  4. Vodka
  5. Cointreau

Then mix it all together 🙂

Number 2 is: Cuban

Ahh the good old Cuban, forget about British weather, Cuban is a little taste of the Caribbean.

All you need is:

  1. Lime
  2. Barcardi rum (Cheaper versions are okay)
  3. 6 whole mint leaves
  4. Ice
  5. Coca cola, I sometimes have lemonade J

The mix it all together 🙂

Number 1: My all-time favourite (The classic) “Pimms”

  1. Pimms (depending on how strong you want it, use a shot class)
  2. 2 shots of Pimms
  3. Chopped strawberry pieces
  4. Chopped cucumber pieces
  5. Orange slices
  6. Mint leaves
  7. Lemonade

Then mix all together 🙂

Why not Try the elderflower pimms as well, it is sweet, perfect for summer and is great for social gatherings and BBQ’s.

Enjoy! But remember drink responsibly and be safe!

Also let us know what your favourite summer cocktails are? Or if you liked some of the recipes you have read on the blog today.

Summer Time refreshing drinks

Hey!

There is nothing like an ice cold drink on a hot summers day to keep you cool and refreshed.

Here are a couple of my favourite iced cold drinks that you can enjoy at any time of the day. If your like me and end up as driver you can still enjoy a nice drink or two and wake up refreshed the next morning.

Good Morning:

I love a cup of coffee in the morning to kick start my day but in the heat its the last thing I want. However one of my favourite bloggers ‘The Londoner’ has invented her own iced latte that you can easily make yourself and enjoy over and over again. To make your own iced Latte visit here.

My coffee-bergs are in the freezer as I type this and I can’t wait to have one tomorrow morning.

Or if you are someone who doesn’t have time or like breakfast making a nice cold smoothie to drink is just for you. I made this smoothie the other day before heading to the gym and it was perfect.

You will need:

1 blender

handful of frozen blueberries/raspberries

1 banana

1 lime juice

handful of ice cubes.

 1. Put everything into your blender and blend together until all the fruit and ice has crushed down and mixed together. Fill your glass or bottle with your smoothie and enjoy. Really very simple and cheap to make. I got my frozen fruit from Alidi.

Refreshing Lemonade:

One of my all time favourite drinks to have with my lunch or dinner is Home-made pink lemonade, my favourite restaurant makes a superb pink lemonade and I had to try making this myself at home.

You will need:

8 lemons, plus extra to serve

200g caster sugar, plus extra to taste

140g raspberries, plus extra to serve

 ice, to serve

1. Remove the zest  from your lemons with a peeler (try not to remove any pith)

2. Juice the lemons and mix the juice, zest, sugar and raspberries with 1.2 boiling water.

3. Let it cool, then seize pressing the juice through with the back of a spoon

4. Add sugar to taste and chill in a jug

5. To serve, add a few lemon slices, raspberries and lots of ice.

Enjoy.

Please let us know what your favourite refreshing drinks to have in the summer and how to make them?

Dawn of the planet of the apes – Film Review

Hey All,

It is that time again, when myself and Jess have seen a new movie and would like to share our reviews with you J we would love to hear from you as well and find out your perspective of the films we have watched.

The film choice for this week was “Dawn of the planet of the apes”, which is a sequel from the 2011 “Rise of the planet of the Apes”. This film is much darker and is set 10 years after its predecessor film. The film outlines how humanity is at the brink of extinction, a world in which humans are not on top, but the Apes are.

Watch the trailer via the below link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sHMCRaS3ao

Here is our review on the new film:

Michaela

Having watched the first part of this sequel, I was excited to see the second film. I had great expectations, and I felt these were met. The film had a great combination of CGI, action, emotion, love, family, revenge and betrayal. I felt at times I was at the edge of my seat wanting to find out what was going to happen next.

Seeing Ceasear (the main character) lead a growing nation of evolved apes was really interesting as he showed great leadership, and I did not look at him as though he was an ape, the film really did humanized the apes. So I felt throughout the film I wanted the apes to always win against the humans or at least live in unity and peace.

Emotional plights are shown in the film, both from the apes view and the humans, together it delivered a very inspirational storyline. (Without giving too much away) When things then go wrong, you can’t help but think everything would have been fine if it wasn’t for particular people/apes destroying the peace. The film really allowed you to capture the soul of every character and connect with them. It also showed the difference between war and peace.

The film grips you to the characters, building a connection and investing in the story emotionally, while allowing the action scenes to excite you. The only negative I would say about this film, is its lack of reference to the first film and explaining what happened within those ten years, and what happened to the main human character in the first film (did he die?).

Overall – I recommend for people to watch this film, if you haven’t seen number 1 (watch that first). This film met my expectations and I look forward to seeing how this sequel evolves further (I hope they make a number 3). I give this film 5/5 film reel.

Jess

To be honest I did not want to see this film when I first saw the trailer but my partner did. So we brought the first film on DVD so I could watch how it all began and my views on the film changed quickly and I could not wait to see the next one.  The first film ‘The planet of the apes’, for me was an emotional roller-coaster from having me in tears to sitting on the edge of my seat.

‘Dawn of the planet of the apes’ did not disappoint in my eyes, you are told right at the beginning what happened when the virus struck in a news report, which follows on from the ending of the first film. We are then introduced again to Caeser (the main character) and his family. Through the amazing CGI the apes are brought to life and humanized successfully.

The film  hits the criteria for an action film; the right about story telling which connects the audience to the characters, the right amount of suspense and ACTION scenes!

Overall I would recommend this for anyone who loves a good Si-Fi or action film. If you haven’t seen the first one I would recommend seeing it before hand as it makes the plot a little easier to understand. You can buy a copy here.

I give this film 4/5 reels.

How to cook a roast chicken

Hey!

Last weekend I cooked my third ever roast dinner and I am pleased to say it went successfully and everyone loved it.

A couple of years ago I got food poisoning from chicken, so I am always wary about cooking chicken and always get someone to check it before I serve it, but this time I was confident in my cooking ability and knew I could cook a roast chicken.

Tips on cooking a chicken:

  • When preparing your chicken make sure you use a separate chopping board to what you will chop your veg on.
  • Before starting your veg preparation make sure you wipe down your kitchen surface and around your taps to get rid of any stray chicken pieces or juices.
  • Time will vary on the size of your chicken. It is usually 20 minutes per pound and an extra 10 to 20 minutes for luck. I cooked a medium chicken which fed four. It took 2 hours and 15 minutes.
  • Keep an eye on your chicken and 20 – 12 minutes before serving take your chicken out of the oven tip your roasting tray to one side and with a spoon drizzle the chicken juice over the skin to help it crisp up.

The recipe I moved is from one of the blogs I read. The Londoner.

Here is the link to the recipe.
